Tropical seaweeds bioprospection & analysis

With over 20 years of international experience in academic research and consulting in the Indo-Pacific region, I have scientific expertise in the taxonomy, ecology and economic potential of tropical marine macroalgae. In 2018, I started blue[c]weed, an independent consultancy specializing in research into tropical marine macroalgae and their value to the blue economy. Blue[c]weed offers expertise and consultancy services to unlock the diverse potentials of seaweeds and support the development of seaweed-related businesses and community projects.

What I can do for you:

  • Species inventories and bioprospection (fieldwork, morphological and DNA
    identifications)
  • Select species with the best potential for a specific project (locality, targeted sector
    or market);
  • Field work to assess biomass in the wild, estimate species availability and seasonal
    occurrence, recommendations on harvestability in the wild
  • Field search for strains to start cultivation trials
  • Advise on farming methods and localities for selected species
  • Advise on R&D needed to develop specific project or cultivation trials
  • Advise on protocols to process biomass and test for properties and consumer safety
  • Advise on HR needs and recruitment profiles
  • Identify and connect with academic or private collaborations for R&D

Experience:

  • Scientific writing (50 peer-reviewed papers)
  • Substantial fieldwork experience incl. tropical macroalgae bioprospection,
    inventories and ecological studies (scuba diving, sampling, processing collections,
    biomass assessments & monitoring, etc.)
  • Species inventories in the WIO: Madagascar, Maldives, Mauritius, Mayotte, Réunion,
    Scattered Islands (Europa, Juan de Nova, Glorioso), Seychelles, South Africa.
  • 25+ scientific expeditions (about 450 days, in nearly 20 tropical countries)
  • Extensive lab experience incl. morphological and molecular analyses & biomass
    assessments
  • Capacity building: Summer schools & teaching experience, mentoring students
    (Masters & PhD).
